Poplar Creek Cleanup

On Saturday April 10 twelve SuperSmyrna volunteers went where no man (or woman) has gone before – pulling trash out of Poplar Creek. According to Keep Smyrna Beautiful (KSB) Director, Ann Kirk; “it was the first time this area had ever been cleaned out.” KSB, sponsors of the cleanup provided the equipment and refreshments necessary to keep everyone safe and happy.

The target was a two-hundred yard stretch of mostly dry creek bed along Village Parkway just north of Spring Road. During heavy rains garbage washes into this area through the storm drains becoming both an eyesore and a health risk. According to Ann; “standing water collects in the debris and acts as a breeding ground for mosquitos.”

Braving sticker-bushes, poison ivy, and threat of snakes (didn’t see any) volunteers plunged into the area literally pulling out a city truck load of garbage and debris. Among the interesting items were over a dozen basketballs, two recycle bins, a car bumper, assorted hubcaps, and numerous tires. Additionally, at least a dozen trash bags were filled.

In less than two hours the task was complete and the area looked significantly better. Ann thanked all the volunteers and mentioned that she was; ”just delighted with the results.” Once again residents came together through SuperSmyrna to help make our city an even better place to live.
