Early morning rain failed to dampen the spirit of over forty-two volunteers who arrived at Brawner Park ready to clean street signs Saturday, August 21, 2010. Volunteers came from several Smyrna community organizations, LIFE International Ministries, and sixteen Campbell High School Orchestra students. Participation was almost double that of last year’s Sign Cleaning which was the first SuperSmyrna event.

Sponsored and organized again this year by Ann Kirk, Director, Keep Smyrna Beautiful we were quickly issued cleaning and safety equipment, given instructions, and broken into four-person teams. Each team had a different strip-map annotating a portion of Smyrna’s streets. We were to inspect the signs along the route and clean those requiring attention.

The teams fanned out across the city as the sun broke through the clouds and over the next two hours we cleaned hundreds of street signs. While we were gone Mrs. Kirk ordered pizzas and sodas to enjoy upon our return.

What made this year really different from last was the addition of high school volunteers. This was the first SuperSmyrna volunteer event involving Campbell High School students. Their participation is the result of partnering the school orchestra with the Smyrna Golden K Kiwanis club for the purpose of providing students an opportunity to serve their community. The young people brought a youthful exuberance that was contagious.

Once our work was done and equipment turned back in we sat under the Brawner Pavilion eating pizza and chatting with old and new friends. The consensus at the pavilion was that the morning had been highly rewarding and both students and adults had fun working together.
