SuperSmyrna Projects, Smyrna, Georgia

One of our main tasks is, of course, to initiate and complete community service projects.

Recent Milestones and Project Summary

We thought you might be interested in knowing that we are taking many steps to organize SuperSmyrna and harness all of you volunteers and prospective volunteers to find out about volunteering opportunities. Here are some of the organizational milestones and completed projects.

Sunday, March 27, 2011 – Teasley Elementary School Grounds Cleanup – Volunteers are needed to weed, plant flowers, and lay pine straw around the front of the school and in the central courtyard. This will be the third project we have done with Teasley and it is always a pleasure working there. We will meet at the school and work from 1:00 PM until 4:00. Rakes, trowels, pine straw, and bedding plants are provided as well as refreshments. We recommend bringing a pair of work gloves. RSVP.

Saturday, April 16, 2011 – Smyrna Citizen Preparedness Initiative – First Aid Training and CPR Anytime – 10 am to Noon, Smyrna Fire Station 1–The training will be limited to 25 people, hosted at Smyrna Fire Headquarters 2620 Atlanta Rd., Smyrna Ga. 30080, and the training will be provided by Smyrna Fire personnel (on-shift paramedics). CPR Anytime–Almost 80 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur at home and are witnessed by a family member. Only 6.4 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive because the vast majority of those witnessing the arrest are people who do not know how to perform CPR. CPR Anytime is a hands-only method of administering CPR developed by the American Heart Association. It takes less than an hour to learn this technique. CPR Anytime is a tool that can help increase survival rates in communities across the country. People who receive the CPR Anytime kits are able to share lifesaving skills with their loved ones by using the kit to train their entire family. Using a multiplier effect, studies have shown that for every single CPR Anytime kit used for training, an average of 2.5 people learn how to perform CPR. This is not a CPR Certification Course. Additional classes on Thursday May 12, 2011, 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Smyrna Emory Adventist Hospital and on Saturday, August 6, 2011, 10:00 am to Noon at the Smyrna Fire Station 1. Free on a first-come, first-serve basis, but you must RSVP.

Saturday, April 16, 2011 – Russell Elementary SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION – 8:30 am to Noon We are joining with civic organizations across Smyrna in making this a day of service. Russell Elementary school is looking for our help to do a Spring Beautification of their school grounds. Approximately 25 volunteers are needed to clean up the picnic area in their courtyard, plant some bushes, and spread mulch and pine straw. They also need a sealant applied to their wooden picnic tables. Please bring shovels, rakes, and a wheelbarrow if you have them. We recommend that you bring a pair of work gloves to protect your hands. Refreshments will be provided. Russell Elementary is located at 3920 South Hurt Road, Smyrna, GA 30082 (just off the East-West Connector). RSVP.

Saturday, August 21, 2010 – 2nd Annual Street Sign Cleaning Project – 9:00-11:00 am, Taylor-Brawner Park Pavilion. For the second year in a row we are participating in a fun project that dramatically improves the appearance of our roadways and increases traffic safety. Tree sap drips on road signs, dirt sticks to the sap, and mildew grows often turning the sign black. Keep Smyrna Beautiful (KSB) will organize volunteers into three-person teams each with a strip map of signs needing attention. Each team will travel in one car or truck. The goal is to complete the cleaning in no more than two hours. Teams will be issued a bucket, water, mop/squeegee, spray cleaner, step ladder, eye goggles, and safety vests. Upon return lunch is provided at the Taylor-Brawner Park Pavilion. Note: 42 people showed up. This project was a great success! Read more.

Saturday, 4/10/10 – Poplar Creek Cleanup – 9:30 am to 11:30 am. This is an opportunity to cleanup an eyesore along the southeast side of Village Parkway just north of Spring Road. Over the years heavy rains have washed garbage into this dry creek bed and there is a real need to pick up the trash. We will meet at 9:30 AM in the parking lot of the Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church, 2010 Village Pkwy, Smyrna, GA. Keep Smyrna Beautiful, sponsors of this project, will issue the necessary equipment and safety items. Refreshments will also be provided. The terrain is uneven and may not be suitable for children.
