Birney Elementary School

Highlights

• Birney was chosen as the Outstanding School Partner of the Year by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce for 2009-2010. The Cobb Chamber’s Partners in Education program chose Birney as the recipient because of our many programs that engaged local business and community partners. From mentoring to tutoring to reading to students, there are always opportunities to impact students at Birney
• Birney is the proud recipient of a SCANA Energy Homework Center grant for the 2009-2010 school year. This grant enables Birney to provide after school tutoring services, free of charge, for students who need a little extra push to help them excel.
• Birney’s Relay for Life Team received recognition for the Rookie Team of the Year for 2009. As a first year team, Birney raised over $10,000.00 for cancer research!

Adequate Yearly Progress

Birney Elementary School has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the eighth consecutive year! Birney is one of only a few schools within the Cobb County school district that hold this honor.

Standard School Attire

It has also started its second year of standard school attire (SSA).

Partners in Education

Birney has also turned to the local community to become involved in education. Past year’s partners include Vinings Lake Church, Johnny’s Pizza (Highlands Ridge Parkway), Chick-fil-A (Macland Crossing), Barnes and Noble (Cumberland), Ink & Toner USA, Forth Family Chiropractic, Concrete Fitness, SCANA Energy and Vivid Marketing.

Safe Rider bus program

Birney is starting the Safe Rider bus program. This is a Cobb County approved program that has been used quite successfully in the Middle and High schools around our county. Each student is part of a graduated discipline program that insures the EVERYONE is safe on the bus and that inappropriate or unsafe behavior is addressed quickly and permanently. Birney bus drivers, parents and the school are partners, working together to provide the best bus environment possible.

Boy’s Leadership Academy

BLA is an after school leadership program for young boys in grades 3, 4 & 5. The club is designed to enhance self-esteem, academic performance, increase passion for reading, learn and apply leadership skills in school and community students at Birney Elementary School.

The students will meet once a week to participate in team building activities and address issues that concern them, both individually and collectively. Each month they will have a theme that helps to guide group discussions and activities. An addition this year will be a book club aspect to the academy. All activities will be facilitated and supervised by teachers at Birney Elementary.
